The DAO attack.
You've heard about it. Probably too many times. It's still incredibly important because it's a simple attack, but managed to absolutely derail one of the most notable projects in the history of cryptocurrencies. The result of the attack was around $55 million stolen, and a pretty epic split in Ethereum $ETH and Ethereum Classic $ETC.
If pretty much everyone knows the history to this then why are we talking about it? Because blockchain developers need to be aware of it when coding smart contracts. If you're an experienced engineer but new to the space, this is an easy thing to over look. It's also a fatal thing to overlook. So whether this is a helpful reminder to experienced devs or some new knowledge for someone just getting started with smart contracts, it's critical to understand how reentrancy attacks work so you don't write faulty smart contracts.
